About This Site

Top Candle Making is written for people who pour candles at home, whether that is a handful of gifts a year or a small booth at the weekend market. We cover the gear a batch actually depends on: soy wax, cotton wicks, pouring pots, fragrance oils and candle jars. Every review comes from pouring, curing and burn-testing real candles, and we say plainly when a product is only fine.

Candle Making Safety

Hot wax burns. Melt wax in a pouring pot set inside a water bath or on a heat source rated for it, never in a pot straight on a high flame, and keep a thermometer in the wax. Wax heated past its flash point can ignite. Never leave melting wax unattended, and never put water on a wax fire: cover it with a metal lid and turn off the heat.

Fragrance oils are concentrated. Follow the supplier's maximum load for your wax, wear gloves, avoid skin and eye contact, and keep bottles away from children and pets. Work in a ventilated space.

Finished candles need the right wick for the jar diameter. An oversized wick can overheat a jar and crack the glass. Burn-test every new combination before selling or gifting it, keep burning candles away from drafts, curtains and anything flammable, and never leave a lit candle unattended. Selling candles may also carry labeling and insurance requirements where you live; check your local rules.
